Sangatta Coal Mine
Since 2003, Thiess in Indonesia has operated open pits at one of the world’s largest thermal coal reserves under a life of mine contract. Our team provides complete project management encompassing production, safety, water management and rehabilitation, giving our client greater confidence and productivity with less risk.
As the world’s largest open-cut contract miner, Thiess was awarded this life of mine contract by Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC). The contract was an extension of our long-term contract mining activities at the KPC Mine, commencing in 1989 with earthworks, piping, tankage, water treatment plants and other ancillary works.
Today, we undertake a range of contract mining services for four of KPC’s pits including mine planning, stripping, blasting, overburden removal, mining and stock piling.
Thiess in Indonesia’s average annual coal production on site is 11MT per annum from 105 bank cubic metres of overburden. Mining across the pits is predominantly open cut and as required highwall auger mining.
Our workforce on this project, spanning administration, mining operations and maintenance, totals more than 2,300 personnel.
