Lake Vermont CHPP

Thiess raised the benchmark in coal preparation and design with the completion of the Lake Vermont Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) in Central Queensland.

A consortium between Thiess and the Thiess Sedgman Joint Venture (TSJV) delivered the multi-million dollar project, which involved design, construction, commissioning and testing of the CHPP to the highest quality standards.

The 800tph Coal Preparation Plant comprised two stage Dense Medium Cyclones, spirals and flotation cells producing two products with pumped co-disposal of coarse and fine reject. The Coal Handling Facilities comprised 300t ROM dump hopper, 800tph crushing and sizing facilities, one-off 60 metre HCC Product Radial Stacker, one off PCI Product Fixed Stacker and associated conveyors. The 4250tph Train Loading Facilities comprised four Valve Reclaim Tunnel, Reclaim Conveyor and 300t flood loading Train Load-out Bin.

TSJV’s design and construction expertise, experience and on-site innovation, exceeded Lake Vermont Resources’ time, quality and performance requirements. In particular, through careful analysis of the project schedule, committed leadership and innovative site rosters, the project team achieved completion within the original timeframes despite encountering significant wet weather delays. The site works, from detailed excavation to coal on took only eight months. The overall project duration was 18 months

We ensured 65 per cent of people employed on the project were from the Central Queensland region. Developing local skills was an important part of the project’s contribution to the community.
