CPB Contractors has successfully delivered BHP’s Wind Fences Project at Nelson Point and Finucane Island in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This landmark initiative supports improved environmental outcomes for the Port Hedland community by reducing dust emissions from iron ore stockpiles.
The project involved the construction and installation of 30-metre-high, 2-kilometre-long wind fences—the first of their kind in Australia. The bespoke mesh system was engineered to withstand the Pilbara’s extreme weather conditions, and are designed to reduce wind speeds, significantly minimising dust lift-off and improving air quality in the surrounding township.
By reducing airborne dust, the wind fences contribute to a healthier environment for Port Hedland residents and workers. The project also demonstrates how infrastructure can be a powerful tool for environmental stewardship and social inclusion, setting a new benchmark for dust mitigation in the resources sector.
This project reflects CPB Contractors’ commitment to delivering infrastructure that supports sustainable development and community wellbeing. This initiative, combined with complementary projects such as large-scale native vegetation planting, demonstrates a holistic approach to improving air quality and supporting the community. CPB Contractors is proud of its commitment to local procurement, maximising opportunities for Indigenous employment and businesses.
CPB Contractors acknowledged the Kariyarra people as the traditional and continuing custodians of the lands on which the Port Hedland Wind Fences project was delivered.
