CPB Contractors worked with Transurban to deliver Victoria’s multi-billion-dollar West Gate Tunnel.
The West Gate Tunnel project delivered a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge, provide quicker and safer journeys, and remove thousands of trucks from residential streets.
Our team focused on ensuring opportunities for local workers and businesses, providing a strategic and socially inclusive procurement program, and value for money urban designs that deliver enhanced benefits to communities and stakeholders.
The West Gate Tunnel Project addressed a number of critical challenges in relation to traffic, growth and liveability across Melbourne.
CPB Contractors delivered this project in a 50:50 joint venture with John Holland.
Design and construction work included:
- Widening the West Gate Freeway from eight lanes to 12 between the M80 Ring Road and Williamstown Road.
- A 2.8km eastbound tunnel and 4km westbound tunnel under Yarraville.
- A new bridge over the Maribyrnong River providing an alternative to the West Gate Bridge; and
- An elevated road along Footscray Road to the Port of Melbourne, CityLink and the city’s north, and major new cycling and pedestrian paths.
Construction commenced in 2018 with the project officially opened in late 2025.
CPB Contractors acknowledged the Bunurong and Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation as the traditional and continuing custodians of the lands on which the West Gate Tunnel project was delivered.
