Transport that kept the Commonwealth Games moving
CPB Contractors has designed and constructed Stage 2 of the Gold Coast light rail project for the Queensland Government and GoldLinQ Pty Ltd.
The extension has provided a seamless connection with heavy rail, world-class integrated public transport solution for residents and visitors, and a one-transfer journey between the CBDs of Queensland’s two largest cities, Gold Coast and Brisbane.
Stage 2 works included:
- 7.3km of dual track light rail alignment;
- Three additional light rail stations at Parkwood East, Parkwood and Helensvale;
- A new 1,000 space park and ride facility at Parkwood; and
- A 400 space park and ride at Helensvale.
Construction commenced in April 2016 and concluded in late 2017, in time to support the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Stage 2 was critical to meeting the increasing demand for public transport and to support the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
An estimated 6,500 Commonwealth Games athletes and team officials, 16,000 workers and volunteers, and 1.5 million ticketed spectators attended events – with light rail trams able to move up to 3,000 people per hour from Helensvale into Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
