CPB Contractors was selected by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to deliver the Science and Engineering Centre (SEC) in Brisbane, Australia, as Managing Contractor.
The SEC is one of Australia’s first Five Star Green Star Education V1 university buildings, designed to inspire future generations through sustainable design and cutting-edge technology. It consists of two 10-level buildings – P Block and Y Block – connected by shaded green space and a common podium that forms the heart of the campus.
Key features of the project include:
- P Block: Basement parking, retail, teaching and learning spaces, and research facilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
- Y Block: Retail, student services, research areas, and a 200-seat function room
- Additional amenities: Student bar, food court, bike centre, lecture theatres, labs, and bookstore
- A 50m FINA-approved pool for swimming and water polo, with aqua-aerobics zone, amenities, and a 1,300m² commercial gym
- The pool is located beneath a landscaped green roof, naturally lit via glazed facades, and mechanically ventilated for optimal air and temperature control
- Heated by an onsite Tri-Generation plant and filtered using UFF technology for best-practice water quality
- Accessibility features include a flush wet-deck and PWD ramp
A standout innovation is The Cube – a two-level interactive space showcasing advanced technologies and Microsoft innovations. The SEC itself serves as a living educational tool, demonstrating sustainable engineering and design principles in action.
The project was completed in 2013.
