Engineering excellence is built through experience, collaboration and trust. At UGL's Logistics Engineering Services (LES), Dale Culpin exemplifies what it means to deliver sustained capability through deep technical knowledge and strong relationships.
With more than 20 years’ experience across Defence, Dale has worked in Navy, Air Force and now land environments, supporting complex systems and the people who rely on them. His career has been shaped by curiosity, resilience and a practical understanding that strong outcomes depend as much on relationships as they do on process.
Dale joined LES as a technical writer and has now completed 10 years with the organisation. While that role remains central, his responsibilities have expanded into training, lifecycle planning and Integrated Product Support (formerly Integrated Logistics Support).
“A big part of my role is helping people understand how support planning fits across the whole lifecycle,” Dale says. “It's about making sure capability actually works when it's needed.”
Currently, Dale supports Special Operations Command, the Australian Defence Force’s specialist command responsible for elite capability, including the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR). His role involves helping introduce new equipment into service and developing integrated product support plans to ensure capability is supported from introduction through sustainment.
Dale’s technical foundation began early. At 14, he was working in car wrecking yards, learning mechanical systems by pulling them apart. That hands‑on experience carried him into roles blending mechanics, electronics and emerging digital technologies.
“Electronic catalogues changed how sustainment worked,” Dale explains. “Linking parts directly to vehicle data gave maintainers confidence they were selecting the right component every time.”
From trucks to boats, land platforms to maritime systems, Dale always applies the same principle throughout his career: when you understand the fundamentals, technical information is transferable.
What has kept Dale at LES is the people he collaborates with, across Defence, public service and industry. Over time, he has built a trusted network focused on shared problem‑solving.
After a career shaped by change, Dale’s 10 years at LES reflect more than tenure. They represent capability built through experience, adaptability, and the connections that sustain it.
