Training a skilled transmission workforce is critical to meeting Australia’s growing energy demands. Through a partnership between UGL and Transgrid, capability is already being built to support the nation’s energy transition for years to come, starting with the people who will deliver it.
A new cohort of apprentices has commenced the Certificate III in ESI – Transmission Overhead through Transgrid’s Registered Training Organisation (RTO code: 90385). Sixteen are employed by UGL on the HumeLink West project, with a further apprentice working on the Maragle substation.
A partnership built for impact
This program is built on a strong partnership between UGL and Transgrid, responding to a clear industry challenge: demand for transmission infrastructure is outpacing the supply of skilled workers.
Transgrid provides nationally recognised training delivered by subject matter experts, while UGL offers practical project experience, mentoring and on-site supervision. Together, they have developed an integrated, industry-led model that links formal training with live construction environments.

Apprentices undertake a blend of practical training at Transgrid’s Eastern Creek facility and on-site work on HumeLink West, developing:

Strong safety behaviours
Practical problem-solving capability
This approach ensures apprentices complete the program with both technical knowledge and direct experience in live project conditions.
The program represents a direct investment in workforce capability, supporting both immediate delivery and the long-term development of Australia’s transmission infrastructure. As the energy transition continues, UGL is helping address critical skills gaps by developing a steady pipeline of job-ready linesworkers.
