“You can design the best system on paper, but if it does not work for the people maintaining the aircraft, it is not fit for purpose.”
That practical mindset reflects the engineering culture Gavin Patching works within at Logistic Engineering Services (LES), part of UGL. As a Senior Integrated Logistics Support Practitioner, Gavin contributes to UGL’s ability to deliver Defence programs that are engineered for reliability, sustainment and long-term operational performance.
Ex permanent Air Force and an avionics technician by trade, Gavin remains an active reservist. His transition into UGL has allowed him to apply operational insight within a large, structured engineering environment that understands complex assets, regulated systems and Defence expectations.
“UGL has strong engineering foundations,” Gavin says. “You are not working in isolation. You are part of a broader system that understands how assets are designed, supported and sustained across their full lifecycle.”
Gavin joined LES in 2022 and was immediately embedded into the Peregrine project, AIR 555, as technical lead. His role focused on building the data structures that enable aircraft to be supported within Defence engineering and maintenance systems.
“This is where engineering discipline really shows,” he explains. “If the data architecture is right, everything else benefits, from maintenance planning and supply chains through to operational availability.”
He has also supported the Triton UAV program, providing both technical and project management input. This work highlights UGL’s strength in Defence projects, bringing together logistics expertise and proven systems to deliver reliably and at scale.
Logistic Engineering Services is an Australian-based consulting and professional services provider specialising in integrated logistics support, software and training across the asset lifecycle, with a strong focus on Defence.
For Gavin, being part of LES means continuing to serve Defence in a different way. One that draws on experience, collaboration and a shared commitment to delivering capability that lasts.
