UGL team members from the Port Hedland Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project had the unforgettable opportunity to take part in “On Country Day”—a cultural tour organised by our client, APA. This unique journey offered an eye-opening connection to ancient knowledge passed down through tens of thousands of years, revealing new perspectives on land, culture, and life itself.
The day began early with Robert Dann, an elder from the Kariyarra Traditional Owner group, guiding the team to sacred cultural landmarks around Hedland and Port Hedland. Immersed in the experience, the team explored local waterways, learned traditional methods of hunting mud crabs in the mangroves, and discovered the medicinal and nutritional uses of native plants. They marveled at intricate rock art and carvings depicting sea animals and handprints, symbols of the deep connection between the Kariyarra people and the land.
As the day came to a close, the group shared a lunch of turtle, kangaroo, and local produce, reflecting on how modern settlement has impacted the Kariyarra community. The team returned with profound insights and stronger bonds, carrying memories of an experience they will never forget.
UGL remains dedicated to actively engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and communities. As part of our Reconciliation Action Plan commitments, we continue to provide our people with opportunities to dive a little deeper in understanding and appreciating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and histories.
