UGL is proud to welcome the first cohort of 2025 to take part in the UGL Diploma of Project Management.
We’re committed to investing in our most valuable asset — our people.
UGL Group Manager of Performance and Development, Katherine McPherson, alongside Managing Director Doug Moss, officially launched the 2025 program at our North Sydney office.
This exclusive face-to-face course, offered to up to 30 participants each year, brought together 27 passionate UGL employees from across the business for a unique opportunity to upskill and grow. Grounded in the globally recognised Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) framework, the course blends theory with practical learning to strengthen project delivery capability within the UGL and CIMIC Group environment.
Since its inception in 2018, the program has supported the development of over 200 UGL employees. Selection is based on demonstrated experience managing projects or packages of work end-to-end, ensuring the program supports those ready to elevate their capability. Our 2025 cohort participants are either already working as project managers or are on a clear pathway to project leadership.
As an engineering company, UGL partners with specialist training providers to deliver and assess the nationally recognised diploma content. This ensures consistency, quality, and a meaningful qualification for all participants.
“UGL is committed to developing our project leaders, and the Diploma of Project Management is central to that goal,” explains Katherine. “Tailored to UGL, it provides a consistent project delivery approach, nationally recognised accreditation, and a valuable opportunity to learn and share across the business.”
As a graduate of the program in 2018, Matthew Karunakaran’s experience with the UGL Project Management Diploma played a pivotal role in solidifying his career journey. Starting as a mechanical engineering graduate in 1999, he has progressed to his current role as head of mechanical engineering at UGL.
“The diploma was not just a learning experience; it was a transformative journey tailored to the unique challenges of the projects we handle,” shares Matthew. “From case studies rooted in real UGL projects to inspiring guest sessions, every aspect of the course resonated deeply with my role. The emphasis on peer interactions and networking has had lasting benefits, as many colleagues I met during the course continue to be invaluable collaborators today." Matthew shared.
Through peer collaboration, engagement with senior leadership, and practical application on real UGL projects, participants are building the skills and confidence to lead — and to shape the future of our business.
We’re proud to continue championing professional growth and continuous learning across UGL.
