Members of UGL’s manufacturing and maintenance team in Ballarat, Vic, recently participated in the Seed2STEM program run by the Geelong Manufacturing Council. The campaign aims to increase the participation of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) based careers by introducing students to businesses that specialise in these fields.
As part of the program, 15 girls from local Ballarat schools visited the UGL site for an engaging day of learning and hands on activities including a site tour showcasing the practical applications of STEM within the business.
The highlight was an interactive workshop where students assembled a mini model of a wagon. This activity allowed them to explore key manufacturing techniques, including:
- using a sheet metal bender
- operating hand drills and tapping threads into holes
- pressing wheels onto axles
- engraving components and assembling a model wagon
Each participant was able to take home their completed wagon model as a reminder of their introduction to STEM careers.
Bradley Adams, UGL Site Manager at Ballarat said, “At UGL, we’re proud to open our doors and demonstrate the variety of career paths available in industries that shape our future."
We believe that building a more diverse workforce starts by engaging with our communities and showing students the many career paths that lie ahead in our industry.
