Behind every safe train ride in Perth is a small but mighty team working around the clock — checking systems, fixing faults, and responding to emergencies. The UGL fire and life services team, in partnership with the Public Transport Authority (PTA), has been keeping commuters safe since 2008.
It all began when the major Metro Rail construction project wrapped up. UGL was brought in to maintain fire and life safety systems across the Perth rail network. The crew has grown into a long-standing partnership focused on protecting the public. The team includes Darren Lloyd, David Gray, John Rennie, Shaun Jones and Katherine Lloyd.
The team looks after critical safety systems at 17 sites / train stations, 5 electrical substations, and throughout 17 tunnel structures. They maintain everything from fire alarms and sprinkler systems to massive ventilation fans that keep air moving in the tunnels. While much of their work goes unnoticed — like replacing aging components or testing alarms in off-peak hours — it all plays a part in making sure you arrive safely to your destination.
One challenge came after a pipe burst at a remote site, causing a washout that left a hole and damaged fire systems. The UGL team jumped into action. “In just six days, the area was fully repaired and safety systems restored” said Darren Lloyd, UGL Superintendent. “It was a huge task, but we jumped right in and took it on.”
Working in public spaces means the team often carry out inspections early in the morning or late at night to avoid disruption. The team respond quickly when things break down — sometimes while trains are running, and crowds are moving through. With systems now more than 15 years old, the job has become more complex. “The team’s deep understanding of these systems, some dating back to the original construction, is what sets us apart,” Darren says. “We know how they work, and how to keep them working.”
Next time you step onto a rail platform, pass through a tunnel, or ride the Perth bus port escalator, know that there’s a dedicated team making sure everything is safe — quietly working in the background, so you don’t have to worry.
