For Michael White, or Mick as he’s known to his colleagues, working at the UGL Townsville workshop really is like working with family. He’s celebrating 30 years at UGL and loves the company so much; he convinced his son to do an apprenticeship at UGL.
“He got to learn a trade in a pretty good place where the quality of work has to be high. So, that was good for him. We both had two different roles here, so we didn't interact that much,” says Mick.
Since joining UGL, Mick has climbed the ranks, starting as a Boilermaker to now as a 2A Service Delivery Manager, a position which gives him lots of job satisfaction.
“My favourite part would be fabrication, building something out of nothing. Just seeing something grow from nothing and in about 8 weeks’ time we go from pieces of plate in the yard to being a locomotive, a platform and it goes onto a truck, and it goes to Broadmeadow. Basically, seeing that completed,” says Mick.
With plenty of locomotives being built, Mick is most definitely kept busy!
