UGL recently hosted an insightful tour for a group from NASCA at the Water Reclamation and Management Scheme (WRAMS) in Sydney Olympic Park, NSW. NASCA, a 100% Indigenous-led organisation dedicated to empowering young people through cultural pride and personal development, visited the facility to learn about UGL’s involvement in the project.
During the tour, UGL team members shared their personal work experiences at the facility, highlighting how a willingness to learn and a positive attitude can lead to successful career paths in the industry. A key member of the team, Dr. Andrzej Listowski from Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA), who has worked closely with UGL over the past 23 years, also shared his experience and contributions to the project’s success.
The NASCA group was guided through key aspects of the WRAMS facility:
- Wastewater treatment process: The tour included a walk along the treatment process, providing a detailed understanding of how wastewater is processed, treated and recycled.
- Sustainability impact: The sustainability efforts of WRAMS, including its role in the Green Games initiative which contributed to the Sydney 2000 Olympics being recognised as the ‘green games’ for their environmental commitment.
- Biodiversity: WRAMS biodiversity contributions, including the transformation of the old brickpit into a habitat for the endangered green and golden bell frog and its use as a stormwater catchment and water storage reservoir.
- Importance of trades and support services: Insights into the vital roles of trades in construction, operations, and maintenance, as well as the critical support provided by finance, health and safety, administration, environmental, quality, commercial, and legal teams in ensuring project success.
The NASCA visit provided an opportunity for participants to understand the significance of WRAMS, its impact on the local environment, and the dedication of the UGL team in maintaining and operating this essential facility over the last 23 years
