Earlier this month our team in Mongolia sponsored AmCham’s 200 tree planting initiative aimed at supporting the ‘Billion Trees’ campaign.
The nationwide campaign was announced by the President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in 2021, committed to planting and growing one billion trees in Mongolia by 2030.
Many of our Thiess Mongolia employees took part in AmCham’s 200 initiative, planting trees at the National Garden Park in Ylaanbatar, Mongolia.
The Mongolian business community have been supporting the President’s call as part of their corporate social responsibility. Major businesses including our current clients, Oyu Tolgoi and Energy Resources, have committed to planting 20-120 million trees by 2030.
The initiative aims to help combat climate change and would play a significant role in increasing forest cover by 9 per cent in the country and reducing desertification by 4 per cent once implemented. As of today, more than 70 per cent of Mongolia’s territory is affected by desertification and land degradation.
The trees planted by Thiess employees aligns with the 15-year anniversary of Thiess in Mongolia, which we celebrated earlier this year.
