During Pride Month, we’re speaking to members of our team who are proud to be allies, speaking up and showing their support for equality.
We spoke to Health and Safety Graduate Sonika about why she’s proud to wear the rainbow and start respectful conversations.
What makes you proud about being an ally?
I’m proud to be an ally because I want everyone around me to feel comfortable being themselves. I also want people to know that I will stand by anyone who identifies as a member of the LGBTIQA+ community so they feel supported and safe.
What are your top tips for being an effective and visible ally?
Wearing the rainbow proudly, actively engaging in conversations with people and asking respectful questions. Oh, and if you’re comfortable, saying that you’re an ally out loud!
How have you been celebrating Pride Month?
At site, I’ve been having constructive and engaging conversations with people regarding IDAHOBIT Day and the meaning of Pride Month. Outside of work, I’m attending a friend’s Pride Month party!
What does diversity and inclusion mean to you?
For me, diversity and inclusion means respecting and accepting the differences of others.
What are the benefits of having an open and inclusive workplace?
I’ve been lucky to be a part of open and inclusive teams/workplaces which makes everyone comfortable to be themselves knowing that there is mutual respect. Because of this, I’ve been privileged to learn a lot from different people from various backgrounds, opening my eyes to a lot of new things that I wasn’t aware of before.
