There have been some inspired and colourful additions to the Solomon project over the years, thanks to the annual art project carried out by senior girl students at Roebourne District High School, Thiess and Fortescue Metals Group teams.
Thiess’ Solomon team joined students to celebrate the most recent art project with a presentation at Roebourne District High School.
The students were recognised with a plaque for their work, which involved designing and painting three large signs.
The students were onsite for a total of three days, undertaking tours of different mining and maintenance areas, and engaged in an interactive maintenance activity building a plastic model engine and the painting project.
The partnership with Roebourne District High School began as an idea in 2017 and developed as a solution to make autonomous trucks standout on site.
Students from Roebourne painted an Indigenous mural on the rear tray of an autonomous haul truck in 2017.
For the 2018/19 project, the students designed and painted three signs.
Roebourne District High School Principal Iain Browning said the project was an opportunity to help students show their artistic talent and build their confidence to look towards mining industry roles in the future.
“We have some incredibly talented young people in our community, and this opportunity has allowed them to show these skills to others and see that they are unique and valued,” Iain said.
Iain thanked Thiess for continuing to build and support this relationship, foster young talent, and allow the students to visit Solomon to learn about roles in the mining industry.
Solomon Project Manager, Steven Southwell, said he was proud to lead a team committed to investing time in young people.
“This project inspires our Thiess Solomon team, and it’s important that we’ve taken the time to recognise the young women involved,” Steven said.
“The artwork is displayed in the Perth office and is a lovely reminder of the partnership we’ve built with the local community and our continued support of the senior girls at Roebourne District High School.”
