All modules and the steel roof structure of Melbourne Airport's new pedestrian bridge are now installed as part of the Naarm Way Project Stage 2 currently under construction.
As seen in the timelapse video, a 6-month long day and night works program (July to October) was required to safely install each of the eight (18m by 10m) modules, to ensure minimal disruption to the more than 100,000 daily travellers passing through the airport and travelling on the road below the new bridge. The use of the CIMIC Group’s 4D modelling platform ToBe Builder was instrumental in enhancing the project team’s communication and construction methodologies and processes to deliver this complex piece of infrastructure.
Visually simulating the build of the new pedestrian bridge enabled the team to engage more effectively with the workforce, subcontractors, client and the large mix of stakeholders providing them the ability to visually interpret the construction methodology planning to alleviate any impacts and considerations to their own daily operations and customer communications.
With all modules now installed, CPB Contractors’ project team is continuing works on the fit out for the new bridge including installing internal services and external cladding underneath.
Dean Anderson, Project Director for CPB Contractors said: “Successfully completing the jacking of the final module across the Terminal 1, 2, and 3 Forecourt was a remarkable achievement, showcasing CPB Contractors’ commitment to minimising impacts of the build on Melbourne Airport’s day-to-day operations. By employing innovative construction techniques, our team has delivered on its promise to fulfill client expectations while setting a new benchmark in construction methods. Works included the assembly of a 70-metre-long, 18-metre-wide steel structure with glazed walls and the complex, installation of eight, 30-tonne modules, all safely delivered within the airport’s busy 24/7 operations.”
On completion, the bridge will provide a direct link from the Tullamarine Freeway to dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones for Terminals 1, 2 and 3 within the T123 car park.
“As the project fast-tracks to completion, we remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver the upgrades that will significantly enhance Melbourne Airport’s capacity and operational efficiency. CPB Contractors recognises the support and understanding of the airport community and all stakeholders throughout this process, and we remain focused on prioritising those strong relationships to ensure a great outcome for everyone.”
