CPB Contractors is continuing to embed more sustainable practices into project delivery, becoming Australia's first civil infrastructure contractor to replace bottled water coolers with Aqua Ubique's MG10 Business Buddy atmospheric water generators.
Introduced at Clapham Yard on the Cross River Rail – Rail, Integration and Systems (RIS) project, the units provide a reliable source of drinking water by extracting moisture from the air and producing 10–15 litres of chilled, mineral-enriched water each day.
The initiative reduces reliance on bottled water, eliminating more than 240 x 15-litre plastic bottles per unit each year while also reducing the emissions and logistics footprint associated with regular bottled water deliveries.
Through Aqua Ubique’s Drop 4 Drop initiative, the impact extends beyond the project, with every five machines on lease supporting the delivery of a unit to communities experiencing poor water quality.
With more than two million Australians still lacking access to safe drinking water, the initiative demonstrates how practical sustainability measures can create meaningful environmental and social outcomes.
Cross River Rail – Rail, Integration and Systems Sustainability Manager Glenn Hedges said the initiative highlights how simple solutions can deliver meaningful outcomes:
"This is a practical, scalable initiative that not only reduces waste on site but also delivers real community benefit. It shows how small changes in how we operate can make a big difference – both environmentally and socially."
This is a strong example of how teams are embedding sustainability into day-to-day operations and finding opportunities to create broader impact – demonstrating how innovation and collaboration can drive better results across infrastructure delivery.
