Rosol (pictured third from left), the first female engineer in her family, has been working in a Graduate role for the past two years on Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI). She was inspired to follow in the footsteps of her grandfather, a renowned civil engineer in Iraq,
“I am seeing the real benefits of utilising both my engineering and construction management knowledge backgrounds. It’s eye opening working onsite! I am learning quickly, rapidly building experience, knowledge and new skills. Every day is different, and I find it fascinating - what you learn theoretically is so different once you apply the methodology.”
Rosol is currently supporting the drainage and fencing scope on the Western Sydney Airport Stage 1 Cargo Project which sees her managing multiple crews. Having come into that role with no actual experience in drainage, Rosol has quickly found her feet, now responsible for the procurement for all the finishing works, including line marking, signage, handrails for drainage pits and head walls.
“I would never have anticipated I would enjoy working in drainage as much as I am. Working with CPB Contractors out here at WSI, I have the opportunity to dip my feet into everything, which is helping me figure out which direction I want to take in my career.”
Rosol is not afraid to ask questions, and she credits the One-Team Culture at WSI for supporting her own development and rapid career progression.
“Everyone is willing to answer my questions and support my development. I'm a naturally curious person, and the reason I know as much as I do now is because of the conversations that I have with the crews on site. My daily interactions with all the various teams and people are invaluable as I gain a deep understanding of who they are, their thought processes and how passionate they are towards the project and the industry.”
Reflecting on the two years’ working at WSI, it’s not one project, person or achievement that stands out to Rosol. It’s coming back each day and seeing the extraordinary difference. “Like I always say to my teammates, it looks different every single day, and that constant progress and feeling of accomplishment is very satisfying.”
Passionate about organisation and driving a clean, efficient workplace, Rosol quickly gained the confidence to speak up and ensure she plays her part in driving the impeccable safety and productivity record at WSI. When conducting inspections, she is meticulous - always checking the details, for example, ensuring tags are current, and items are in the correct location.
“I'm more confident than when I entered the industry. Everyone respects me and treats me as an engineer. I genuinely feel like WSI is my second home.”
With aspirations herself to get to the top and one day be the Managing Director for a company like CPB Contractors, Rosol wants more young women to join the industry.
“I always tell everyone to give it a shot. There are great moments and when you see how hard everyone is working, it makes you want to work hard too. I love working hard and putting in the hours. My career is only just starting, and I am proud of how far I’ve come.”
