When CPB Contractors Design Manager Gerard Quigg joined a team of 10 CIMIC Group employees to help build a bridge in Rwanda, he didn’t just help connect two villages - he helped change lives.
Delivered as part of the Bridges to Prosperity (B2P) program, the Gitenga Trail Bridge now links more than 2,700 residents, giving them safe access to schools, markets, and healthcare across the Base River.
“It’s hard to put into words what the experience meant to me,” Gerard said. “We worked side-by-side the local community to build the bridge that will change their lives and provide new opportunities. As the local workforce had never built a bridge before - teaching them about safe construction and engineering methods – and seeing their pride - was very rewarding. Seeing their joy when we opened the bridge was unforgettable.”
Located 2,000 metres above sea level, the project challenged Gerard both physically and professionally.
“The altitude and weather conditions were tough, but the teamwork made it all worthwhile. Planning works without plant, machinery or cranes, working at height and over water required focus and attention to detail. Despite our language differences, we worked together safely and shared a common goal - to create something lasting.”
CPB Contractors' long-standing participation in Bridges to Prosperity, through parent companies CIMIC Group and HOCHTIEF, reflects our commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development. The initiative empowers local communities while providing employees with the opportunity to use their engineering expertise to make a lasting difference.
“This experience has changed how I approach my work,” Gerard added. “It reminded me that engineering is about people, connection and legacy.”
