CPB Contractors’ sustainability approach is about ensuring the long-term success of our projects, people, communities and ecosystems by integrating environmental, social, economic and governance factors into our decision-making. On Transport for NSW’s M12 Motorway West project, that mindset led to a first for road projects in New South Wales (NSW): the use of green concrete.
This more sustainable concrete mix is less energy-intensive to produce, achieved by increasing the limestone content in the cement blend from 8% to 12%. It was used for the Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement on the main carriageway of the M12 West Project.
CPB Contractors Project Director Vishal Khosla says the sustainable alternative underwent extensive testing.
"We’ve rigorously tested this eco-friendly mix to ensure that it meets the strength and durability standards required for infrastructure of this scale."
While the volume used on this project was limited, its successful application opens the door for broader adoption across future infrastructure projects in NSW – a step forward in lowering the carbon footprint of major road construction.
“Hopefully we’ll see more applications across the industry now that we know it’s a viable alternative,” adds Vishal.
CPB Contractors is delivering the M12 Motorway West package in a joint venture with Georgiou. The project includes a 6km dual carriageway motorway between The Northern Road, Luddenham, and 400 metres east of Badgerys Creek, along with the construction of eleven bridges and a grade-separated interchange connected with the Western Sydney International Airport.
