Wellbeing and mental health are core focuses at CPB Contractors. In line with this focus, a team of Hauora Champions are working together to develop initiatives that enhance wellness across CPB Contractors’ New Zealand (NZ) operations.
"The word ‘Hauora’ is a Māori philosophy of health, meaning overall wellbeing, shared by Diversity & Wellbeing Advisor Paea Longopoa. 'Hauora represents your spiritual, mental and emotional, physical, and family and social wellbeing. When these are in balance, we thrive", explains Māori Roopu member and Senior Site Administrator Stanley Aranga, Ngāi Tuhoe.
Aimed at promoting overall wellbeing, 13 Hauora Champions will work with projects and offices across NZ to develop a 12-month plan focused on mental health initiatives.
“Champions and project leads will work together to promote initiatives that support mental wellbeing. It is a shared responsibility that ensures everyone's hauora is nurtured and cared for”, shares Paea.
Hauora champion initiatives will include fitness programs, shared lunches, family days and sports events, as well as training and development opportunities.
As part of this program and in collaboration with MATES in Construction (MIC), crews on the Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre project have participated in regular toolbox talks and suicide prevention training. The project was also recognised by MIC for its commitment to mental wellness and awarded an accreditation, acknowledging the number of team members who have accessed the training.
Along with project-based training, CPB Contractors has more than 120 Mental Health first aiders across its projects, sites and offices and provides free support services to all employees and their immediate families through a voluntary and confidential Employee Assistance Program as part of the CIMIC Group. CPB Contractors is also the only construction company in New Zealand to hold a Wellbeing Tick accreditation
