Tarong Coal Project - Meandu Mine

Thiess completed its operations contract at the Stanwell Corporation's Tarong Coal Project – Meandu Mine in December 2012.  The mine is located 24.8 kilometres south-east of Kingaroy in the South Burnett region.

Thiess was awarded a base three-year contract with three one year extensions in October 2007. We commenced operations at the site on February 1, 2008, following the mine’s successful transition from the previous owner and operator.

The contract for total mine operations included: mine planning, drill and blast, rehabilitation, overburden removal including dragline operation, coal mining, coal processing, and maintenance of all fixed and mobile plant. All coal produced supplies the adjacent Tarong and Tarong North Power Stations, which are a major source of Queensland’s electricity.

The project had a comprehensive Safety Management Plan in place that has evolved from extensive consultation with the workforce. The risk management practices focus on hazard identification and control at all levels. Standard operating procedures have been developed and are continually reviewed to ensure currency and compliance with legislative requirements.

Thiess developed and maintained an Environmental Management System (ISO 14001 Certification achieved) tailored to comply with all statutory and contractual needs of the Tarong Coal Project. The scope of environmental management activities extend to the rehabilitation of all areas disturbed by mining activities – to achieve a final landform capable of supporting native ecosystems.

The mine engaged more than 160 local suppliers to assist in the mine’s successful operation. Mine and client personnel meet with community members on a regular basis to ensure community stakeholders are well-informed of the mine’s operations and progress. Thiess’ commitment to the local community’s development was delivered through a range of consultation, engagement, sponsorship, donation and fundraising activities.
