Work on the West Gate Tunnel Project is continuing at pace as construction on the internal road surface of the twin tunnels nears completion.

Now more than 70 per cent complete, the CPB Contractors delivery team has installed more than 4.5 kilometres of road deck across both tunnels. Delivery of the road decks is made possible by a specialist machine that has already lifted and installed more than 2,000 24-tonne concrete segments.

All tunnelling works are now complete, and the removal of twin Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) has commenced.

Other important pieces of the project are also coming together, including:

  • Widening works on the West Gate Freeway nearing completion
  • The giant launching gantry crane above Footscray Road preparing for its final lifts
  • Construction of the tunnel’s entries and exits

CPB Contractors’ delivery of the West Gate Tunnel Project is also the first Australian tunnel to be constructed with an elevated road surface, providing another tunnel underneath to serve as an important point for maintaining critical services, ventilation and emergency access.

CPB Contractors is working with Transurban and the Victorian Government to deliver Victoria’s West Gate Tunnel Project in a joint venture. Design and construction works include:

  • Widening the West Gate Freeway from eight lanes to 12 between the M80 Ring Road and Williamstown Road
  • A 2.8km eastbound tunnel and a 4km westbound tunnel under Yarraville
  • A new bridge over the Maribyrnong River providing an alternative to the West Gate Bridge
  • An elevated road along Footscray Road to the Port of Melbourne, CityLink and the city’s north, and major new cycling and pedestrian paths
