Digital Engineering on North East Link Early Works

Since 2019 CPB Contractors has been working on early works for Melbourne’s North East Link, the biggest road project in Victoria.

The North East Link will connect the M80 Ring Road with an upgraded Eastern Freeway and provide an improved road connection across Melbourne. The early works involved the design, development and removal, relocation or protection of utility services including 220 KV transmission towers, other electrical assets, telecommunication assets, water and sewerage assets, and drainage and gas pipelines.

To perform this work efficiently, CPB Contractors used augmented reality technology to space proof works areas with sufficient clearances to avoid clashes and ensure service provider clearances were met. CPB Contractors also developed a fully attributed 3D solid model and automated software interoperability workflows which allowed seamless consumption of the major utilities requiring relocation into various systems within our common data environment.

To ensure maximum value was gained from the building information modelling a level of trust in the model needed to be achieved, understood and maintained. To do this, international information management standards were adopted and a Digital Engineering Management Plan was developed to ensure all data had integrity and was fit for purpose. 

Software interoperability was a key factor in allowing the model to be the single source of truth. We heavily relied on OpenBIM formats and developed interoperability workflows that enabled synchronised information to feed into various systems such as Federated Models, Augmented reality, Automated Clash Detection, 4D Sequencing, Permit to Excavate System, GIS, CAD plans, Reports and Registers. 

All these innovations assisted our teams to safely deliver each infrastructure asset.
