Tunnels and station civil works

The CPB John Holland Dragados (CPBJHD) consortium was awarded the $1.15 billion Tunnels and Station Civil Works (TSC) contract in June 2013.

The works are part of the $8.3 billion Sydney Metro Northwest, which is Stage 1 of Sydney Metro.

Overall works were finished seven months ahead of schedule, and the tunnels and civil works for the future stations and services facilities were completed to a high standard of quality on 10 June 2016.

The consortium, which brought together Australia’s most experienced tunnelling contractors, started work on site in October 2013 to build the 15km twin tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping – Australia’s longest railway tunnels – as well as the civil works for five new stations and two services facilities. 

Our team’s approach was to always be ahead of the game, whether it was construction, safety, quality, managing the environment, engaging with the community, or working on a tunnel boring machine.

The project won the Infrastructure Partnerships Australia award for contractor excellence in the 2016 National Infrastructure Awards.

Major achievements on the project include:

  • Using four tunnel boring machines at once to excavate and line 30km of tunnel between Bella Vista and Epping in only 16 months;
  • Delivering civil works for five stations and two services facilities;
  • Excavating and lining a large-span crossover cavern in shale;
  • Achieving world-first production rates in the precast facility, which made the concrete segments that line the tunnels;
  • Establishing Australia’s first tunnelling simulation training centre; and
  • Achieving a leading sustainability design rating.

Sydney Metro Northwest is the first fully-automated metro rail system in Australia, delivering:

  • Eight new railway stations;
  • 4,000 commuter car parks; and
  • A new high-frequency single deck train system to Sydney's growing north-west region.
